The issue of taxation arises at many levels of corporate activity in Germany, and translators and interpreters may be faced with tax-related topics in a wide range of texts and scenarios. This seminar will focus on a detailed bilingual description of the main types of German corporate taxation, from direct taxes such as Körperschaftsteuer (corporate income/corporation tax) and Gewerbesteuer (trade tax) to indirect taxes (specifically Umsatzsteuer/VAT), as well as the various forms of Organschaften (tax groups). It also considers the fundamental principles underlying German taxation, addresses accounting for taxes and surveys available monolingual and bilingual reference resources.

As a special topic, the seminar will examine the current state of implementation of the OECD’s Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project in Germany, accompanied by a detailed analysis of the available bilingual terminology and corpora resulting from this landmark global initiative to combat corporate tax avoidance and ‘double non-taxation’. Linked to this will be a look at the European Commission’s state aid proceedings against several EU member states relating to tax breaks offered to a number of multinational corporations, including Amazon, Starbucks and Apple.

Please note this seminar is designed for German-to-English translators, and that the primary teaching language will be English.
